Average review score:

Storm Over the Lake & To Love and Cherish
Storm Over the Lake: Three years ago, reporter Dana Meredith had ruined--and lost--the only man she'd ever loved. Now, brilliant, enigmatic businessman Adrian Devereaux seemed bent on revenge against the woman who'd cost him his empire--and his heart. Intensely tender and suddenly kind, Adrian had already attacked...with sweet intent.

To Love and Cherish: Shelby Kane wasn't about to let her friend's bossy brother run her off his family's ranch again! Kingston Brannt kept a tight rein on his emotions, but made it clear he resented her presence--and the passion she stirred in him. Ruggedly handsome and impossibly stubborn, this lonesome cowboy was about to learn a lesson in love from the woman he scorned!

Dunwoody Pond: Reflections on the High Plains Wetlands and the Cultivation of Naturalists
Published in Paperback by Bison Bks Corp (May, 2001)
Author: John, Jr. Janovy
Average review score:

A thought-provoking book for teachers
John Janovy Jr. has captured the wonder and passion of following one's bliss. His book is an exploration and illustration of the phrase made famous by Joseph Campbell and of James Hillman's idea that within each of us resides the "acorn" of what we are destined to become. How better to explain the fascination Janovy's young students find in parasites too small to be seen without a microscope and too discounted to draw dollars for those who study them? Janovy celebrates his students' questions, sacrifices, and achievements. He must be a wonderful teacher! And this is a book that teachers will want to read, particularly those who seriously reflect on how it is that a student's interest gets captured. It isn't that Janovy has the answers. It's that he raises such interesting questions.

The Earth Is Mostly Ocean (Rookie Read-About Science Series)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (April, 1996)
Authors: Allan Fowler, Mary Nalbandian, and Robert L. Hillerich
Average review score:

Great for the classroom!
I teach second grade and I used this book, THE EARTH IS MOSTLY OCEAN, during our unit on water and oceans. It is simple yet very comprehensive. It briefly covered all aspects of the curriculum. New vocabulary terms with picture clues are included at the end; great for discussion. I would highly recommend this book to primary teachers with curriculum units about the ocean and its inhabitants. It works as a great introduction to your lessons!

Everglades: Buffalo Tiger and the River of Grass
Published in Paperback by Boyds Mills Pr (March, 1998)
Author: Peter Lourie
Average review score:

Buffalo Tiger and the River of Grass
This is a book that honestly tells the story of the lives of the Miccosukee Indians who live with the disasters wreaked upon their homeland by the encroachment of the White Man's "civilization." Buffalo Tiger is a full blooded native of the Everglades, born on an island in the real glades. He operates a tour business taking visitors into the glades to see the real environment. It tells of the environmental problems that have driven many of the natives to abandon their homes and move even as far as Miami. It also describes beautifully, the glories of this unique environment and the attempts of the adults in the tribe to keep their culture alive as their children are lured into the TV culture. It is a great book for both environmental education and for teaching about cultural diversity. Beautifully illustrated with color photographs taken by the author.

Exploring Saltwater Habitats

Authors: Sue Smith and Cynthia A. Belcher

My kid loves it
My 4 year old daughter considers this one of her favoritebooks, and has for months. It's educational, it has lots ofinteresting animals in it, and it's frequently a springboard for other educational discussions. I wouldn't have thought a 4 year old would enjoy this relatively sophisticated book (it has a fair number of unfamiliar words in it), but she does!

FamilyFun Vacation Guide: Great Lakes

A great gift for a family new to the area!
I've lived in the Chicago area for 20 years, and there were a few things in here that I didn't know about, such as the American Girls Shop/ play in Chicago. But by and large, most of the Chicago area stuff I knew about. Where it really comes in handy is that many of the areas featured are within a few hours drive. Great if you're going to visit family and need something for the kids. We found all kinds of neat stuff about one of our favorite vacation spots in Door County, Wisconsin that we otherwise would have missed. One area that could stand to be improved - they have Chicago, then Northwestern Illinois (Galena etc). What about the 'burbs? There's a few little things here and there, but otherwise the whole Chicagoland area outside of the city limits is missed. I would also like to see more on restaurants. Chicago has a TON of restaurants, including the upscale but very cool Chicago Firehouse (actually built into a firehouse, complete with pole - saw Mayor Daley there!) and there are only 7 mentioned. All in all though, a good buy, and as I said, would make a great gift for a family with kids new to the area.

Fertility: Stories from the Collection/Cassette (Lake Wobegon U.S.A.)
Published in Audio Cassette by HighBridge Company (May, 1995)
Author: Garrison Keillor
Average review score:

Keillor's uniqe ability comes through once more
This cassette features four more stories that only Garrison Keillor could conjure up. It starts with "The Krebsbach's vacation", which portrays two old-timers in the agony of taking a vacation that neiter one wanted to go on. Then comes "Prophet", Keillor's special take on the responsibility of knowing "the truth". "The six labors of Father Wilmer" is a terrific story of a priest who has had it with certain church members. "Fertility" isn't what the title would suggest it is, but it serves to show again that Garrison Keillor brings to the table both in style, and ability, what no one else can. This is another great cassette.

an excellent summary of Ohio's lakes
This is an excellent reference for any fisherman or outdoor enthusiast who lives in or visits Ohio. It's very good for planning a weekend trip, or looking for new wilderness areas to explore.

Flood
Published in Hardcover by National Geographic (October, 1996)
Author: Lauber
Average review score:

Educational and engaging!
In yet another brilliantly written nonfiction book, Lauber twists and turns through the natural and social history of the mighty Mississippi River. From formation to channeling efforts and natural disasters to future plans, the narrative text blends scientific and real-life accounts to present all the "tributaries" of the River. The combination of full-color photographs, illstrations, and maps complements and elaborates the informative and readable text. Lauber concentrates on particular places and people affectd by the flood of 1993, anchoring the more complicated geology and more technological engineering in explicit examples to which readers can relate. Lauber, an indepth researcher, provides specific scienctific facts and descriptions, further depicting the dismal effects of flooding. The remarkable photography records the natural disasters caused by Mother Nature. Catastropic images along the Mississippi transition to photographs of solid community support, affirming readers' beliefs in human acts of kindness. Such integration of photography creates a style that engages the reader; livley writing provides a more comprehensive understanding of the man versus nature conflict. The orderly, attractive design of the text answers questions about the past and evokes new ones regarding the future of the Mississippi River. Contrasting the power of nature and the powerlessness of mankind to fully control the mighty Mississippi; this photo-essay narrative stimulates an interest for real-life science in upper elementary readers.
